As people search for new beverage options, hard seltzers are taking the world by storm. For some, beer leaves them feeling bloated and the high sugar content in coolers, hard alcohol and other mixed drinks is too high for comfort.
That’s where seltzers are a great option. These beverages are made with a base of carbonated water, which means the overall sugar and calorie numbers are far lower. From there, different brands will throw in different flavours and alcohol, although vodka is the popular choice for most.
The popularity of these fizzy drinks has skyrocketed in the past few years, and all kinds of brands are jumping on the bandwagon to a grab a slice of the market. Many of these brands can be found at your local liquor store – here’s a look at some of your options:
Vizzy
Vizzy Seltzers are dual-fruit flavoured vodka seltzers that clock in at just 100 calories and 5% ABV. The classic variety pack can be found by a bright orange box and big white lettering, featuring Pineapple Mango, Blueberry Pomegranate, Black Cherry Lime, and Strawberry Kiwi flavours. Coors Seltzer
The beer giant Coors Light has hopped on the seltzer train with their Coors Seltzer brand. These seltzers are available in tall, thin cans and all share the same ABV of 4.5%, plus many are under 100 calories. The standard flavours include Blue Raspberry, Fruit Punch, Strawberry, Peach, Black Cherry, Pina Colada, Lemon Lime, Mango Sunset, Watermelon Daiquiri, and Grapefruit. Plus, their special slushie pack features 3 famous slushie flavours.
Nude
Nude Beverages was founded right here in Vancouver not long ago and produces some of the most popular seltzers. Unlinks some seltzer brands, each product is sugar-free, sweetener-free, and carb-free. The classic vodka sodas come in Classic Lime, Peach, Raspberry Lemon, Strawberry Kiwi, Cranberry Raspberry, Black Cherry, and Watermelon. For something other than vodka, try their Gin Soda with Lemon or their Tequila Soda with Lime. Nude also makes 3 lemonade flavours crafted without sugar or sweetener.
Truly
Every Truly Seltzer is made with a hint of real fruit flavour, juice from concentrate, and 5% ABV. And if you’re looking for flavour variation, Truly might just have the most. With dozens of flavours, Truly can be purchased in various mix packs. These mix packs include Berry, Citrus, Party, Truly Unruly (8% ABV), Lemonade, Punch, Vodka Soda Classic, Vodka Soda Paradise, Vodka Soda Twist, and Tequila Soda.
White Claw
White Claw seltzers are made with 5% ABV, 100 calories, and just 1 gram of carbohydrates. The original flavour lineup includes Black Cherry, Mango, Natural Lime, Ruby Grapefruit, Raspberry, Watermelon, Tangerine, Lemon, Pineapple, Blackberry, and Strawberry (new). But it doesn’t stop there – White Claw offers a Surf pack with dual-flavour options, a Surge pack with blue cans and 7% ABV, and a new Lemonade pack with just 1 gram of sugar per can.
Nutrl
Nutrl is a vodka soda seltzer brand that uses no carbs, sugar, sweetener, preservatives or additives in their products. The standard 5% Nutrl comes in a white can, while the 7% version is in black. Strait & Narrow
Straight & Narrow is another local brand, born out of Vancouver Island and specializing in Pacific Coast cocktails and flavours. Their vodka sodas feature unique natural flavours and a hint of sugar, including Black Currant Honeysuckle, Plum Sage, Yuzu Camomile, and Huckleberry Fir. Their Gin seltzers are also just 110 calories and made with locally sourced ingredients found in flavours like Grapefruit Rosemary, Peach Elderflower, Pear Rhubarb, and Lemon Lavender.
Social Lite
Social Lite got started in Ontario crafting seltzers with no sugar, sweetener, or artificial ingredients. Their classic vodka sodas come in Triple Berry, Blood Orange, Field Strawberry, and Watermelon. Their Cocktail Seltzers line comes with flavours like Strawberry Daiquiri, Lime Margarita, Pina Colada, and Blackberry Smash. In liquor stores, watch for their Cocktail Seltzer mixer pack and Vodka Soda mixer pack.
Tempo
Tempo is a craft gin brand created by Goodridge & Williams Distillery. Aside from their own line of gin, the brand also makes some delicious Gin Smash seltzers made with fruit flavours and a touch of sweetness. The 6 flavours include: Blackberry Lime, Lemon Mint, Strawberry Lemon, Grapefruit, Mango Peach, and Black Cherry Lemon. Watch for the Tempo Gin Smash 12-pack in liquor stores.
Cottage Springs
Inspired by lake days at the cottage, Cottage Springs is a Canadian brand that makes vodka seltzers plus vodka water, vodka lemonade, vodka iced tea, tequila soda, and tequila lemonade. Their Dock Day mixer pack comes in 4 of the best vodka seltzer flavours: Blackberry, Pineapple, Strawberry, and Tangerine. Cottage Springs also makes a 7% vodka soda line with dual fruit flavours, plus tequila seltzers available in a mixed 8-pack or party 15-pack.
