Since our first store opened in November of 2020, Cheeky’s has committed itself to being a good neighbour in the Fraser Valley and Vancouver communities it serves. We’ve chosen to funnel our support to the cause of global homelessness via our ‘Green Gratitude’ program – a challenge that is very much at the forefront here on the Lower Mainland.
Did you know Cheeky’s dedication to global homelessness pre-dates the opening of any Cheeky’s location. It all started in 2013, when our owner Laura Rowse helped launch the first ever safe housing project in Cambodia for World Housing.
World Housing is a Vancouver-based organization providing housing to the world’s most vulnerable people by working with global NGO charity partners. 14% of the world’s population lives without adequate housing, amongst trash, sewage, drugs and abuse. The conditions are unlivable. Kids grow up without safety, stability, education and nutrition. But World Housing is making progress for the world’s most vulnerable people, having funded over 900 new homes and housing over 4,500 people in Canada, Mexico, El Salvador, Haiti, Cambodia, Colombia and Philippines.
A World Housing Original Founder
As an original founder of World Housing, we started with the mission of ending homelessness in the communities we serve. Our hope is that children will grow up in safe, stable homes and have greater freedom to pursue education, and raise the standard of living for themselves, their families and future generations to come.
Every ATM transaction fee collected since our inception at the Maple Ridge location has gone towards ‘Green Gratitude’, which has resulted in over $1,000 raised for World Housing. 100% of these donations are injected right back into the community, to initiatives like Maple Ridge’s own RainCity Housing, which runs programs to support the homeless right here in the Lower Mainland.
In Maple Ridge, there are roughly 125 people experiencing homelessness, 60% of which have lived in the community for ten years or more. Around 100 of those people rely on shelter beds each night. We hope that through our ‘Green Gratitude’ program we can make an impact and lower that number.
Cheeky’s ‘Green Gratitude’ giving program is deeply embedded in our core values. That’s why going forward, with every location we open, Cheeky’s will choose a project to give to locally. That way, we can continue to help the communities we serve thrive and grow stronger.
